These are some simple how to's with the anti virus software and firewall that we have installed on your PC.

AVG Anti virus Software
Sygate Personal Firewall

AVG Anti virus Software

When you launch AVG, this will be the first screen you see.
From here you can run a full system scan, change settings and most importantly you can update your software.
Remember that anti virus software is only as good as your last update! To do this double click the AVG icon on your desktop or right click the AVG icon in your task bar and select run AVG. To do a full system scan, select the Run Complete Test button. To update select the Virus Database button

You will then see this window. This will tell you your database date and give you an option to update. To do this, click the update button

That will bring you to this window. If you are on DSL or Cable and always leave your PC on you can schedule downloads. If you are on broadband I would suggest to have AVG check every day. Just change the update if database is older then xx days and make it a 1. But for those on dial up you will have to do this manually. Make sure you are connected to the internet and click the update now button. Follow the prompts and you are done. I would recommend you do this no less then once a week. Also update when you get news of a new virus that has been discovered.

Sygate

Your Sygate firewall is pretty straightforward for what you will be using it for. What this does is "hide" your computer from the internet world when you are online, and block ANYTHING that tries to access the internet without your consent. You can see with the below picture the Win32 Kernel has a ? on it. This means that anytime this wants to access the internet it will ask you.

Anytime something tries to gain access of the internet you will get this prompt box asking if you wish to allow it. You can tell it yes or no and you can also check the remember this answer box. Checking that box for say Firefox and clicking yes will mean that anytime Firefox is launched, it will never ask you, it will just access the internet. This means that if you were to get a trojan horse virus and it tries to get to the internet, it would be blocked and you would be alerted to its presence.

If you ever want to get to the more advance features, you can double click the sygate icon in your task bar like below.
